  • Instagram will test hiding likes in the 🇺🇸 as soon as next week after testing it in 7 countries 🇨🇦🇮🇪🇮🇹🇯🇵🇧🇷🇦🇺🇳🇿 [Verge].

  • Researchers in Japan and at the University of Michigan said Monday that they have found a way to take over Google Home, Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri devices from hundreds of feet away by shining laser pointers, and even flashlights, at the devices’ microphones [NewYorkTimes].

  • Amazon has big plans for its virtual assistant. One day, perhaps sooner than you think, Alexa will take a proactive role in directing our lives. It’ll interpret our data, make decisions for us, and summon us when it has something to say [TNW] - if this is not scary, I don’t know what is!

  • Facebook apologised on Friday after an anonymous online post on Medium alleged that black, Latino and Asian women continued to face racism at the company a year after a former employee brought the issue into public view. The post outlines incidents that 12 current and former employees experienced while on the job [Cnet].

  • Many people received text messages overnight that were originally sent on Valentine’s Day [Verge] - the timing made some really awkward moments like receiving a text from a dead ex!

  • Saudi Arabia reportedly stole sensitive personal data of activists from Twitter via employees at the company that they paid off [TechCrunch] - there’s a lot in this saga and while Twitter seems to have done most things right, it is a pretty nightmarish scenario.

Top Apps Worldwide for October 2019 by Downloads
WhatsApp was the most downloaded non-game app worldwide for October 2019 with close to 71 million installs. The countries with the most installs of the app during this period were India at 39 percent of its total downloads and Brazil at 8 percent.
TikTok was the second most installed non-game app worldwide last month with more than 66 million installs. The countries with the largest number of TikTok installs were India at 41 percent, followed by Brazil at 7%. Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram rounded out the top five most installed non-game apps worldwide for the month.
